How Dr. Tajaddod evaluates your child’s smile and determines whether an expander may help. A palatal expander is an orthodontic appliance used to gently widen a narrow upper arch in an appropriately selected child.
Dr. Tajaddod may recommend one when a child has a crossbite, limited room for permanent teeth, or a mismatch between the upper and lower dental arches. Because children are still growing, timing matters. An early orthodontic evaluation allows Dr. Tajaddod to identify developing concerns and determine whether treatment would be beneficial now or should simply be monitored.
When Might a Child Need Palatal Expansion?
Dr. Tajaddod may consider expansion when a child has:
- A narrow upper dental arch
- A posterior crossbite
- A jaw shift when biting
- Limited room for permanent teeth
- Significant crowding related to arch width
- Certain developing dental or skeletal relationships
Not every child with crowding needs an expander. Dr. Tajaddod bases her recommendation on each child’s unique anatomy, bite, growth, and orthodontic needs.
A Comfortable, Digital Evaluation
At Merna Tajaddod Orthodontics, we use advanced digital scanning technology to create a detailed 3D image of your child’s teeth and bite: without traditional goopy impressions. The scan helps Dr. Tajaddod carefully evaluate the width of the upper arch, how the teeth fit together, and whether expansion may be appropriate. We also take time to show parents what we see, explain our recommendations, and answer questions so your family feels comfortable and informed before beginning treatment.
Can Expansion Help With Breathing?
The upper jaw and palate are closely related to the nasal cavity, so Dr. Tajaddod considers airway and breathing concerns as part of a comprehensive evaluation.
Please let us and your child’s healthcare providers know about symptoms such as habitual snoring, mouth breathing, restless sleep, pauses in breathing, daytime fatigue, or difficulty concentrating. These symptoms do not necessarily mean that a child has obstructive sleep apnea, and orthodontic care is not a substitute for evaluation by a pediatrician, ENT, sleep specialist, or another qualified medical professional.
For selected children with a narrow upper arch, expansion may be one part of coordinated care. It should not be recommended solely because a child snores or breathes through the mouth.
Every Child Deserves an Individualized Plan
Dr. Tajaddod evaluates each child’s teeth, bite, arch width, facial development, and stage of growth before recommending expansion. When airway or sleep concerns are present, she may also encourage coordination with the child’s medical providers. Call us at (650) 854-8888 or schedule a complimentary consultation online.
