caring for teeth with braces and retainers

Braces, wires, springs, rubber bands, and other appliances can attract food and plaque, which can stain teeth if not brushed away. Most orthodontists
recommend brushing after every meal or snack with fluoride toothpaste and carefully removing any food that may have gotten stuck in your braces. Some orthodontists will also prescribe or recommend a fluoride mouthwash, which can get into places in the mouth that a toothbrush can't reach.

Flossing & Brushing Tips With Braces
To floss teeth if you have braces, feed the short end of the floss through the space between the main arch wire and the upper portion of the tooth closest to the gum. Use a gentle sawing motion to work the floss on each side of the two teeth the floss is between. Be careful not to pull with too much force around the arch wire. Begin brushing teeth by using a regular soft toothbrush. Brush down from the top and then up from the bottom on each tooth with braces. Next, brush your teeth with a proxabrush or "Christmas tree" brush. This brush is specially designed for cleaning between two braces. Insert the brush down from the top and then up from the bottom between two braces. Use several strokes in each direction before moving on to the next space between two braces. Repeat the procedure until all teeth have been cleaned.

Foods to Avoid While Wearing Braces
While wearing braces, most foods can still be eaten if you cut them into small pieces that can be easily chewed. There are certain foods, however, that can break or loosen braces and should be avoided, such as:
            1. Hard or tough-to-bite foods, such as apples or bagels
            2. Chewy foods, such as taffy or caramels
            3. Corn on the cob
            4. Hard pretzels, popcorn, nuts, and carrots
In addition, do not chew ice or bubble gum.

Caring for Retainers
Every time you brush your teeth, brush your retainer as well. Once a day or at least once a week, disinfect the retainer by soaking it in a denture cleanser, such as Efferdent, Polident, or other brand name solutions. Add the cleanser to a cup full of warm -- but never hot -- water. Thoroughly rinse the retainer with plain water before placing it back in your mouth.

Playing Sports While Wearing Braces
You can continue to participate in any sport if you have braces. When playing sports where there is a possibility of getting hit in the mouth, a specially designed mouth guard will need to be worn. The mouth guard, made of durable plastic, is designed to fit comfortably over braces and will protect the soft tissues inside the mouth.

Once I get braces, I'll need to do as you mention and take good care of them. I'll for sure follow the tips on what types of food to avoid. That way, there won't be a chance that I could damage the braces or ruin something. It'll be hard for me to give up apples as I do love those but I think I can manage.

Thank you for your tip to brush your retainer as often as you brush your teeth. My daughter has had crooked teeth ever since her adult teeth grew in, so I think we're going to get her some braces. I'll be sure to help her follow these tips once it comes to that time.

I love how you talked about avoiding tough to bite foods or hard foods that can break or loosen braces. My husband and I are looking to get our son braces, but we recently moved to Venice, FL so we need to find a new orthodontist that will help us. We will keep these tips in mind after we find a professional to help us.

Ah, thank you for the tip to avoid apples and caramels when you're wearing braces. I'm actually considering adult braces myself. It'd certainly make me feel more confident to have a straight smile.

Dang, thanks for reminding me to stay away from caramel. I admit, that sweet-salty caramel is my weakness. But I hope to get braces sometime this year, so I need to prepare to swear off any food that might get in the way.

I didn't know that caramels messed with your braces. My kids need braces since their teeth are insanely crooked. I'll have to make sure they don't eat too many sweets once the braces are installed.

I have been insecure about my crooked teeth, that's why I'm considering to have braces. I'm glad you shared this; once it's installed, I'll make sure to use proxabrush for my braces after brush my teeth with a regular toothbrush. I'd also keep in mind to avoid hard food such as corn on the cob, hard pretzels, and carrots first.

This is some really good information about caring for your teeth when you have braces. It is good to know that it would be smart to use a different toothbrush. Personally, I would want to get a professional to help me with keeping my teeth and braces clean.

I appreciate that you explained that flossing is important to ensure your braces and teeth would be safe. My brother mentioned the other day that he was hoping to find a reliable orthodontist to help him with his underbite jaw problem. He asked me if I had thoughts on the best option to consider. I like this enlightening article, I'll tell him he can consult a trusted orthodontist as they can provide details about the treatment.
